Loss of Innocence
The term ââ¬Å"loss of innocenceâ⬠is now being widely used in different spheres, especially in philosophy. This notion is usually associated with human age, meaning that getting older can lead people far from what they were at the very beginning, in their childhood. Indeed, the older a person is, the less naà ¯ve and lighthearted they are, the less confident they become about their own views. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Loss of Innocence specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More But is this the knowledge alone that makes people lose their innocence? There is an opinion that ââ¬Å"A gain in knowledge is a loss of innocenceâ⬠¦a greater learning about social reality destroys old verities (truths) and induces uncertainty. Learning about the social world can be a threatâ⬠. Obviously, there is a grain of truth in this idea. Analysis Indeed, in the modern world the old verities and values are forgotten, pe ople seem to be really different from what they were in the past. If earlier people were more modest and reserved, now they became really open, and sometimes even rude. The reason for such change is development of communication systems and technologies. An essay ââ¬Å"A good man is hard to findâ⬠by Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor also illustrates how knowledge about social reality can destroy the old truths. The main character, a grandmother, who was a real lady, was indignant at how people have changed to worse in comparison with her time. She recalled that in her time ââ¬Å"children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and everything elseâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 64), and that ââ¬Å"People are certainly not nice like they used to beâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 68), etc. However, the grandmotherââ¬â¢s knowledge about society is very little in comparison with the Misfitââ¬â¢s one. He appeared to be a very rude man, who had the family of two parents an d three little kids killed. In addition, he shot the grandmother himself, even though they had a nice conversation just before. He did it in a very cold way: he ââ¬Å"shot her three times through the chestâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 84). Why would he do this? Why was he so cruel? The answer is simple: the man lost his innocence because of socializing: ââ¬Å"I been most everythingâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 79). The man had many occupations, met many people, and some of the experiences were not really pleasant: ââ¬Å"I even seen a woman floggedâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 79). Obviously, this experiences made the man tough, and they left no place for sensitivity in his hard. Another example of how threatening the knowledge about social world can be is the essay â⬠A small good thingâ⬠by Raymond Carver. He author shows how a pair of ââ¬Å"happy and, so far, luckyâ⬠parents, Howard and Ann, turn into angered beasts ready to kill someone (Carver, 3). Advertising Lookin g for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The reason for that is the gain of knowledge about social reality. The doctor, who failed to save their beloved song, Scotty, a negro boy, who was accidentally killed, the baker, who caused pain by reminding about their son ââ¬â all these people took away the innocence of the pair. The character of baker, too, serves as an example of innocence loss. The man realized ââ¬Å"the sense of doubt and limitation that had come to him in his middle yearsâ⬠(Carver, 37). These feelings were caused by his experience of communication with different social groups, which once more proves, how harmful social world can be for an individual. The character of another short story also became a victim of knowledge. Josephine from Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The story of an hourâ⬠was so shocked by the news about her husbandââ¬â¢s death, that she demanded: ââ¬Å"Free! B ody and soul free!â⬠(Chopin, 47). However, the long-awaited freedom only reached her with death. The heroine died at the moment she saw her husband, who was actually alive and safe. Did she die because of happiness? Doubtfully so. Josephine could not bare the fact that she was mislead by other people; by the time her husband appeared, her soul was already dead. This is one of the horrifying results of learning about society. We can assume that if she did not talk to her husbandââ¬â¢s friend, Richard, who told about the news, she would live long and happily. But it was knowledge that killed her. Conclusion As it can be seen, gain of knowledge about social world can often be dangerous. Without a doubt, knowledge of this kind leads to the loss of innocence. Works Cited Carver, Raymond. Book report on Xenocide essays
Book report on Xenocide essays The book I read is called Xenocide by Orson Scott Card. This book is the third in a quartet that chronicles the life of a man called Ender and his sister Valentine. In this book, both Ender and Valentine are over 3000 years old thanks to faster-than-light-travel and Einsteins theory of relativity. Ender is known through out the universe as Ender the Xenocide for destroying the Bugger race 3000 years earlier. His sister Valentine is equally famous for her writings under the name Demonsthes. Both are assumed dead for more than obvious reasons. Though soon enough a world in trouble will find out the truth and learn that they are more than lucky these two extraordinary people are still alive to help them through possible annihilation. The book begins with Ender all ready on Lusitania and married to the most prominent scientist there. Valentine is on a distant planet also married and with kids when she finds out that Ender needs her to help and she must come to Lusitania right away. Now this would have to be a most serious problem to uproot a family from there home and travel to a distant world, wasting years through the theory of relativity and close to light speed travel. And it is a very serious problem. Lusitania is a new colony planet that contains the only other sentient life forms every found by humans. The other being the Buggers, though they were destroyed 3000 years before. Therefore strict rules were placed upon the colonist not to associate with these life forms. They broke these laws. This was not the largest threat though. The problem was that the sentient life forms contain a virus in their genetic code that is deadly to all humans who come in contact with it. Even worse, there is no cure. Therefore, Starways Congress has decided to destroy the entire planet with the Dr. D device. This device is a molecular disrupter. Therefore, Valentine leaves right a...

Alt as an Alternative to Alternative
Alt as an Alternative to Alternative Alt as an Alternative to Alternative Alt as an Alternative to Alternative By Mark Nichol The prefix alt-, an abbreviation of alternate, has appeared in the media lately, attached to the word right to denote a political movement supporting nationalism and opposing multiculturalism and liberal immigration policies. Although this prominence is a very recent phenomenon, the term alt-right- or, at least, its full form, ââ¬Å"alternative rightâ⬠- is not brand new: Coined in 2008, it was adopted two years later as the name of a website devoted to content espousing alt-right principles. However, itââ¬â¢s unclear when the abbreviated version of the term was coined; it might date back mere days or weeks at most. A dictionary entry offers this definition of alt: ââ¬Å"Denoting a version of something, especially music, that is intended as a challenge to the traditional version.â⬠(Alternative, in this sense meaning ââ¬Å"not traditional or usual,â⬠is an extension of alternate, which is ultimately derived from Latin alter, meaning ââ¬Å"other.â⬠) The coinage follows a format employed for a handful of terms, of which alt-rock is the most prominent: In 1979, various sources began to refer to underground music inspired by the punk rock movement with the adjective alternative; as such music, ironically, became mainstream, it was labeled, among other things, ââ¬Å"alternative rock,â⬠and thence alt-rock. As this movement was increasingly commercially exploited, the termââ¬â¢s popularity declined. However, the prefix has been affixed more recently to comedy that, like anything alt, is considered edgy or iconoclastic. Similarly, alt-fiction is the term given to novels and short stories that subvert and defy conventions of traditional fiction. Thereââ¬â¢s even alt-dating, the use of online dating websites that appeal to people outside mainstream society. Such terms are perhaps inspired in part by the use of the prefix alt in Usenet, a computer-based discussion system established in 1980, to denote groups outside the systemââ¬â¢s conventional discussion categories. The abbreviation is also familiar to users of PC keyboards, which includes an Alt key used in combination with other keys to carry out a function distinct from that enabled by pressing the other key alone, but this term originates with alternate, not alternative. Itââ¬â¢s quite likely that in our jargon-happy culture, the prefix may begin to appear more often, modifying additional nouns as a shortcut for signifying unconventional behavior or thought. In tandem, however, as often occurs when jargon proliferates, expect such terms to be used derisively or ironically as well as sincerely. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
